Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our research team as a Carbon Sequestration Research Assistant. In this role, you will be responsible for quantifying carbon sequestration using a variety of models and methods, assisting in field and laboratory experiments, and contributing to data collection and analysis. This position is based in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (CAFNR) and offers an exciting opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research related to environmental sustainability.

This position is funding by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.

Responsibilities:

Quantify carbon sequestration using carbon/eco-hydrologic/climatic/crop models.

Develop manuscripts, project reports, and external/internal grant proposals.

Assist in field and laboratory experiments to quantify the carbon sequestration potentials. Develop/collect input datasets for the models, which include in-site and remote sensing.

Participate in extension and outreach activities as needed by the program. Work in collaboration with other researchers in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (CAFNR). Support achieving the university’s commitment to teaching, research, and service excellence. Project management (externally funded) Assist undergraduate and graduate students and research technicians. Assist principal investigator and co-investigator as needed.

Participates and assists in college-wide events, activities, and committees and performs other duties inclusive as deemed necessary.

Required Education & Experience:

A Ph.D. in earth science, eco-hydrology, civil engineering, geosciences, agricultural engineering, or any other relevant academic field emphasizing carbon dynamics, and climate change eco-hydrology.

No prior work experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Experience in carbon, and crop modeling

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Strong quantitative and programming experience in R, Python, C, C++, and/or comparable languages.

Strong numerical modeling and analytical and statistical skills.

Strong interest in working with multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in earth science, eco-hydrology, civil engineering, geosciences, agricultural engineering, or any other relevant academic field emphasizing carbon dynamics, climate change eco-hydrology and its impact assessment, and natural resource management.

0 - 3 years of related work experience.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

Considerable experience in carbon dynamics, climate change, spatial data analysis, laboratory analytical techniques, field research design, and project implementations at different scales (field and watershed).

Interested in carbon modeling, downscaling of climate projections, and crop modeling.

Strong record of peer-reviewed publications and experience preparing grant proposals.

Able to work with and train undergraduate and graduate students.
